CENTRAL SQUARE, N.Y. — The Central Square community is mourning the loss of Jennifer Ann Smolnik, a respected educator, devoted wife, mother, daughter, and friend, who passed away on Monday, June 15, 2026, at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was 45 years old.
Jennifer’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of her family, colleagues, students, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched throughout her years of service in education. Known for her dedication, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the success and well-being of children, Jennifer built a legacy that will continue to inspire generations.
Prior to her passing, Jennifer took early medical retirement from the Central Square Central School District, where she served as Principal of Millard Hawk Elementary School. During her tenure, she earned the admiration and respect of students, parents, teachers, and staff alike. Her leadership was marked by kindness, integrity, and a genuine desire to help every child reach their fullest potential.
Those who knew Jennifer often described her as a compassionate leader who placed people first. Whether supporting students through challenges, encouraging teachers in their professional growth, or partnering with families to create positive educational experiences, she approached every aspect of her work with grace and dedication.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jennifer’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her loving husband, Michael A. Smolnik, who stood faithfully by her side throughout her illness. Together, they built a family centered on love, support, and resilience. Jennifer is also survived by her six children, who were the center of her world and the source of her greatest joy.
She is further survived by her parents, Casimer and Joanne Kronafel Pietrowicz, whose love and support remained constant throughout her life. Jennifer also leaves behind four siblings, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and close friends who will cherish her memory and carry forward the lessons she taught through her example.
Throughout her battle with cancer, Jennifer demonstrated remarkable courage and strength. Despite facing significant challenges, she remained devoted to her family and continued to inspire those around her with her determination, optimism, and faith. Her resilience became a source of encouragement for many who witnessed her journey.
Family and friends will have the opportunity to pay their respects during calling hours from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Divine Mercy Parish in Central Square. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at the church, located at 592 South Main Street. Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Central Square.
As the community gathers to honor Jennifer’s life, many will remember not only the educator she was, but also the loving wife, devoted mother, cherished daughter, and loyal friend whose compassion and strength touched so many lives. Her legacy of service, faith, and love will remain an enduring part of Central Square for years to come.
